Doctors, health gurus and even talk show hosts inundate us with information regarding the health benefits of wine. Could the information they are going by be correct? Rusty Solomon feels the answer is Yes, it could and it is. According to the American Heart Association, these people are right. Drinking an eight-ounce glass of wine per day has tangible health benefits. Of course, overdrinking any kind of alcohol cancels out the benefits.
Reason Number One: It Can Make You Live Longer
According to a study of nearly 2,500 men that spanned 29 years of their lives, wine drinkers have 34 percent lower rate of mortality than those who drink beer or hard alcohol. The study, which was undertaken in Finland, can be found in the 2007 Journal of Gerontology.
Reason Number Two: May Prevent Heart Attack
People who drink the suggested amount of wine per day and have high blood pressure have less of a risk of heart attack than people who do not drink at all — a 33 percent less risk. This is according to a 16 – year study conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health which was uncovered by Rusty Solomon. It was undertaken with 11,711 men and can be found in the 2007 Annals of Internal Medicine.
Reason Number Three: May Prevent Heart Disease
Procyanidins is found in the tannins of red wine. Procyanidins have been found to prevent heart disease. Rusty Solomon suggests that you drink red wines from southwest France and Sardinia, as they contain more of this potentially life-saving ingredient than any other wine. This information is located in the 2006 Nature report on a study conducted at London’s Queen Mary University.
Reason Number Four: May Prevent Type 2 Diabetes
According to a study conducted at the VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam, people who drink the AHA suggested amount of red wine per day have 30 percent less of a chance of developing type 2 diabetes. Each of the 369,862 participants of the study was watched for roughly 12 years, according to the 2005 Diabetes Care.
Reason Number Five: May Prevent Stroke
There is an astounding difference in stroke risk between moderate drinkers and those who do not partake in alcohol consumption — 50 percent. An 8-year study at the Columbia University watched 3,176 people and found that those who did not drink or drank too much suffered more strokes than those who drank the suggested amount.
Reason Number Six: Lowers the Risk of Developing Cataracts
Wine drinkers have the advantage over beer drinkers when it comes to cataracts. Choosing wine over beer can lower your risk by 43 percent, according to an Icelandic study found in 2003
Reason Number Seven: Reduces the Risk of Colon Cancer
Rusty Solomon has a friend who was part of a research team at Stony Brook University which study was published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology in 2005 showing that red wine consumption can reduce the risk of developing colon cancer by 45 percent. The study included 2,291 participants and took four years to complete. Rusty Solomon would suggest wine drinking for this reason alone. Colon cancer is quite deadly.
Reason Number Eight: Keeps Brain Functioning Properly
Everyone suffers some sort of brain function decline as they age, but it can slow down less rapidly for those who drink moderate amounts of alcohol. Columbia University monitored 1,416 participants and published these findings in the 2006 Neurepidemiology. Rusty Solomon believes if you don’t want to become “dense”, drink lots of red wine!
